Baptism August 30, 2007
Posted by Jackie Sampson in : Uncategorized , 6commentsBarbara and I talked about this when we were together. We were raised in the Baptist church and their belief was that you be baptized by immersion when you were of an age to realize the significance of the rite – often 10 -12 years of age, or as adults. Barbara thought she and Lorraine and possibly Paul were all baptized in the Prairie Creek Baptist church baptismal. (In Paul’s writings he mentioned that Dad was instrumental in adding the basement to that church at which time the baptismal was included). Before that time baptisms were done at outside water locations, creeks, rivers, etc. That was probably the case with our older siblings (anyone know for sure?) The Prairie Creek Baptist church was without a minister for some time and eventually disbanded. I was baptized in the Baptist church in Central City when we moved to town in 1947. Because the country church was closed and without a minister during the time Jean would logically have been baptized, she missed out on that. Somehow I think that Jean was baptized later, privately, in the Presbyterian Church in Central City. This was perhaps before or at the time she and Ed married. I know the Presbyterian minister married them in the home wedding they had in our house in Central City. Do any of the Nelsen offspring know for sure? My children were all baptized in the Presbyterian church as babies by the “sprinkling” method. Then they were confirmed at a later age. It is interesting how varied our customs are.

Doing a “fingerwave” August 23, 2007
Posted by Jackie Sampson in : All Posts, Uncategorized , 3commentsMy daughter in law, Paulette, just posed an interesting topic to me and I’d like to know who might respond to this. She wants to know how to go about doing a “fingerwave”! (I think she is watching old Bette Davis movies). Well, even I am too “young” to have had them but I’ve seen pictures of my older sisters that I think had hairstyles of that vintage. Helen, Vi, Bonnie…………..Could this be coming back? Heaven help me. Anyway she found a website that addresses this subject. www.vividinfinity.com/fingerwave/fingerwaving.pdf
and it shows, step by step how to do it.
(Sidebar: Paulette has lovely hair with natural curl so I don’t know why she wants to spend time doing this, but if there are any comments regarding this, post it on the blog.)

Gloria Jean and Ed August 23, 2007
Posted by Diane Bird in : All Posts , 6commentsThis is a picture of me, Diane (Vi’s daughter) with Gloria Jean and Ed taken in October of 1990 when my husband, Mike, and I visited them in Bella Vista. They were warm and welcoming and delighted in sharing stories of my parents (Vi and Dick) with us. We laughed until tears ran down our faces. I loved them both.

Anniversary! August 18, 2007
Posted by Diane Bird in : All Posts , 4commentsMike and I both forgot that today is our wedding anniversary; we always forget; so I called him on my cell phone (he’s working the clubhouse at the golf course today) and we had a good laugh, as did all the golfers who shared his delight. 45 years today. Long time. Here’s why we always forget: On the day of our wedding, Mike had just flown in from Damage Control School on Treasure Island (Navy) and I had just flown in from St. Mary’s College in South Bend, IN, where I had just finished taking my “comps” (comprehensive exams) in my major as well as my “GRE’s” (graduate record exams). We drove out the next day to Alameda (Navy housing) and within three weeks we were on a plane to Japan where we were stationed for three years. The wedding itself just got stuck in there someplace. Thank heavens my lovely mother did all the planning and arranging and worrying, and left us with a beautiful day to remember (or forget)
