Today Barbara and I celebrated her birthday by having lunch together in Grand Island. We got our waitress to take our picture. It was an especially nice day because we spent the afternoon visiting with Ev and Nancy. (They had a doctor’s appointment so weren’t free to lunch with us) I’m having Marty post the picture of the two of us.

Barbara! Missed your birthday… sorry… Happy Belated!! Looks like you two are sharing the same meal with the same fork :-) but I know one of you moved to the other side of the table for the picture. Such lovely, young-looking aunts. All your nieces and grandchildren no doubt hope they fare as well.

Thank you for the birthday greetings! We had a very nice lunch at Carlos O’Kelly’s and when the waitress found out it was my birthday, she brought a big dish of “Fried Ice Cream” with 2 spoons yet!

We had a real good visit with Evelyn and Nancy and I know they were both sorry they were unable to attend the Reunion! But between Jackie & I, we supplied them with the geneology and histories and also took pictures to show them.

You know, I wanted to tell you all a little about Jackie and her birth and I wrote it and it’s listed in recent posts but I can’t find it so I’m going to take the chance of repeating myself!
I was 10 years old when Jackie was born and Helen was 11 years older than me! Jackie was a black haired little cherub, as cute as could be but she soon let us know she could hold her own in this big family. Anyway, she was born in January and Lorraine, Jean & I were in country school, less than a quarter mile from our farm home. And I remember at the last recess seeing a strange car sitting in our yard and we all thought, “Oh boy, we’ve got company!” Well before school let out for the day, word came to the school that Lorraine, Jean & I were to go to Uncle Arthurs home a half mile to the west. Well, we didn’t know what was up but we did what we were told. After supper, Uncle Art took us home and when we walked in the house, there was Dad sitting before the big cook stove with his feet on the oven door, toasting his toes as usual. But in his arms was this black haired baby and Dad was feeding her a bottle!
The older girls, Helen, Vi and Bonnie came home for the weekend and they seemed to think it was their privilege to name this new baby. I remember them standing by the bedroom door just off the kitchen and tossing names around. There was a chalk board on the kitchen wall right by the doorway and when they decided on her name they proceeded to spell it out on the board and finally decided she should be named Jacquelin without the E on the end. The reasoning for that was they didn’t want anyone calling her JacqueLINE! Little did they know that some years later, our Presidents wife’s name was to be Jacqueline and she pronounced it with the LINE on the end. I suppose the thinking was the same as when Lorraine was born and her name was Gertrude Lorraine and Dad didn’t want her called Gertrude because he just new people would call her GERTIE!
I don’t remember much about Jackies growing up years — she and Jean played alot together and I can see yet Jean riding her bike pell mell down our long driveway and Jackie trying to keep up behind her on her trike with her little legs pumping up and down as fast as they could. Jackie started school when she was 4 years old. We had a man teacher at the time and he came to our house one evening to recruit her for kindergarten. The folks must have said yes. I am wondering, Jackie, if you had anyone else in your class?
